The Strathdearn Community (encompassing Moy and Tomatin) has been experiencing growth difficulties for some years. Over the next few decades, the community will receive substantial funding from wind-farms in the district. With this in mind, the Community Council commissioned CADISPA (Conservation and Development in Sparsely Populated Areas) to identify the ideas, needs and wishes of Strathdearn residents. Questionnaires were sent to every household. The returns were collated and whittled down to form a list of community priorities, which in turn became the basis of a Community Development Plan.

The Plan is a blueprint for a sustainable community. Objectives include providing adequate employment opportunities, sustainable and affordable housing, leisure services and facilities for all ages, promoting healthy lifestyle and encouraging people to take part in various Community activities.
The Strathdearn Community Developments Company (SCD) was created to turn those aspirations into reality. It was formed in 2013 as a Limited Company with Charitable Status.

What we do

  • The SCD has been formed to benefit the community, namely:
  • To manage community land and associated assets for the benefit of the Community and the public in general.
  • To provide, or assist in providing, recreational facilities, and/or organising recreational activities, which will be available to members of the Community and public at large with the object of improving the conditions of life of the Community.
  • To advance community development, including urban or rural regeneration within the Community.
  • To advance the education of the Community about its environment, culture, heritage and/or history.
  • To advance environmental protection or improvement including preservation, sustainable development and conservation of the natural environment, the maintenance, improvement or provision of environmental amenities for the Community and/or the preservation of buildings or sites of architectural, historic or other importance to the Community.

Our future plans

Our vision is for sustainable demographic growth by encouraging new employment opportunities, supporting existing local businesses, good services and facilities, and affordable housing. We will be guided by the Community Development Plan which will evolve as projects are completed and new ones added in consultation with local wishes. Several projects have been identified for development in the short term.

The Paths Project will create a safe network of paths for locals and visitors to the area. Initial efforts will focus on a safe walking route from the bus-stop on the A9 at the north end, though the centre of the village, to Juniper Drive on the south side.
The Amenity Development Project will investigate the viability of both a new larger community hall facility next to the old hall and an inn/restaurant facility on a separate site. A feasibility study will be commissioned to this end.

The Community Health Project will initiate and provide start up funding for a scheme to provide health care assistants in our locality. Working in tandem with Highland Home Care, we will employ several local people in part-time posts, thus ensuring the system is robust and flexible. The scheme will become self-funding, drawing on existing NHS funding.

As well as implementing the various projects chosen by the community, SCD also aims to invest in revenue generating projects in order to make the Strathdearn community financially sustainable for the long term.

Membership

There are three categories of membership of the Strathdearn Community Developments (SCD) company and we would be delighted to welcome you if you choose to join us by using the most appropriate membership for you.

Full: Open to those residents with an eligible postcode, who are on the electoral register, and support the purposes of the Trust.
Associate: Open to individuals who support the purposes of the Trust but are not resident in the eligable postcode area.
Junior: Open to those aged between 12 and 17 who support the purposes of the Trust.
