PILLOWCASES FOR CARE HOME STAFF

PILLOWCASES FOR CARE HOME STAFF

Have you got any pillowcases to spare?

If so, can you take them to The Community Shop on Fridays or Mondays?

These will be collected and passed on to a project started by churches in Inverness to turn pillowcases into wash bags which can then be used by healthcare workers in local care homes to put laundry in.

The idea is that these wash bags full of dirty laundry can then be put straight into the washing machine to minimise personal risk of infection to healthcare workers.

If you are self-isolating, or are not able to leave your pillowcases at The Shop for any other reason, please phone Gill Watson on 01808 511247 to arrange collection from the doorstep.

With our thanks for any pillowcases you are able to donate.

FOURTH UPDATE FROM SCC & SCD

On last week’s update we indicated that, in addition to the Highland Council community grant, application had been made for a “third Sector” government grant through HIE. We are pleased to report that our application has been successful. These monies have been awarded to ensure community resilience during the period of the pandemic. In doing so our aim to assist all residents within the community who are affected. Initially we aim to tackle this with the following four actions:-

1 – We have placed a fridge outside the community shop. It is stocked with some food as a Community Larder. Essentially a food share facility for any member of the community who is finding it difficult to make ends meet to help themselves. It is also available for donation.

2 – We recognise that the majority of the community are facing additional expenditure on food as a consequence of the children being off school or being furloughed, etc. We also recognise that these costs can be cut by frequent visits to Inverness supermarkets. However this adds to our overall risk. We have therefore decided to use some of the community funds to subsidise the fresh food sales from the community shop. As of Friday 24th April all bread, fruit, vegetables and meat with be subject to a 20% discount on normal shop prices until further notice. This should cut down on the journeys as well as being kinder on your purse.

3 – As promised, we have opened a Covid Resilience Fund to help people in the community who find themselves compromised as a consequence of the pandemic. Applications are available on-line here. Alternatively, forms are available in the shop or by phoning the community phoneline and asking for a form to be sent / delivered. There is no stigma associated with asking for help in whatever form required and all applications will be treated in confidence within 48 hours. We would therefore encourage anyone that needs assistance of any kind to complete a form and speak to us.

4 – Funds have been set aside to provide transport to the vulnerable or compromised to enable them to attend medical appointments, etc. Similarly, monies are available for providing other services normally undertaken by friends and family but not currently available due to travel restrictions – for example grass cutting, etc.

We are continually looking for other ways to provide help and encourage community spirit so if you have any ideas, please let us know on 07594 305775.

Moy, Dalarossie & Tomatin News – MAY 2020

We’re still in lockdown and unable to hold our normal services and activities. Lockdown is not without its challenges – many of us are self-isolating, but we’re always at the end of the telephone.

We’ve been getting more prayer requests, which is understandable given the present anxiety and uncertainty we’re all living through. We regard praying for people and situations affecting our parish – and far beyond our parish – to be a great privilege. We’ve included some prayers at the end of this newsletter, but if we can help pray for any other concern please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re also here to help with anything we can, or just for a chat, or a general catch up, albeit by phone!

We’re fortunate that Strathdearn Community Developments and Strathdearn Community Council have been able to put together such a comprehensive package of help for the local community in the present crisis.

Who would have thought at Christmas-tine that by spring-time we’d be in the grip of a global pandemic with all its horrible repercussions! We’re certainly living through strange times which don’t seem real sometimes – but which serve to remind us that although we may have believed we were the ones in charge – we’ve found out that’s not the case!

Meanwhile, Rev Robert Brookes, our Interim Moderator (the Minister looking after us just now as our Church is in vacancy) is producing a weekly Sunday Service which he is sharing on our Churches’ website at http:www.strathsnairnanddearn.co.uk. It can also be accessed via links from the community website at htpps://www.strathdearn.org and the Strathdearn Facebook page. We are grateful to Steve Cornack for his help and patience in arranging this. You can also have the Service e-mailed to you, if you let Vivian know.

OTHER NEWS

HIGHLAND FOODBANK

The Foodbank is feeding an average of 30 people a day in the Inverness & Nairn areas alone. On the day they e-mailed us they had helped a mum and child who had to flee their home due to domestic violence. With normal drop off points in communities not being available, people not wishing to visit the supermarket too frequently to purchase donations, and the scarcity of some products, Blythswood are suggesting if folks would like to continue donating, it’s best to send donations in cash (no matter how small the amount) by bank transfer (phone 01463 717630 for account number and sort code); or by cheques (made payable to Blythswood Care, with a covering note to say that it is for the Highland Foodbank, and posted to Blythswood Care, 1 Glebe Street, Inverness IV1 1RF).

SOME NEWS FROM THE INVERNESS PRESBYTERY CHURCH SUPPORT GROUP

(set up to help local congregations in the present crisis)

Pillowcases for care home staff

There is a local initiative, started in churches, to turn pillowcases into wash bags. These can then be used by healthcare workers in care homes to put laundry in, and go straight into the washing to minimise personal risk.
The Tomatin Community Shop has kindly agreed that any pillowcases donated to the project can be dropped off there, and Gill Watson has kindly agreed to take these to Inverness on Wednesday mornings. (If you’re self-isolating or can’t get to the Shop for any other reason, Gill will pick up your pillowcases if you phone her on 01808 511247). Cathie Simpson has also been in touch with the project and she and some other ladies are helping with the sewing. Our thanks to Gill, Cathie, Sheila, Betty and anyone else involved with this worthwhile project.

Out of the Box Bible Exploring for Families

Out of the Box Productions was set up to provide Christian outreach using puppetry, song and other forms of creative arts across the North of Scotland. They work with schools and churches and they are presently broadcasting a five week family series exploring the Bible with fun challenges, survival skills, puppets and lots more. You can watch these sessions live at 9.30am on Sundays or later on following the links below. Included with each episode in this series will be material to help discussion at home along with an age appropriate activity sheet. Definitely worth taking a look at:

A WORD FOR THIS MONTH

Psalm 139: 1-5

1 O Lord you have examined my heart and know everything about me.

2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts, even when I’m far away.

3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.

4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.

5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.

Sometimes we don’t let people get to know us completely because we are afraid they will discover something about us that they won’t like. But God already knows everything about us, even down to the numbers of hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:30) and still he accepts and loves us. God is with us in every situation, in every trial – protecting, loving, guiding. He knows and loves us completely.

The great collection of songs and prayers the Psalms contain let us glimpse the heart and soul of humanity. Expression is given to the whole range of human experience as David and the other writers honestly pour out their true feelings, allowing us to see the dynamic, powerful and life changing friendship with God as they confess their sins; express their doubts and fears; ask God for help in times of trouble; and praise and worship Him. The honesty of the psalms can help guide us into a deep and genuine relationship with God.

A PRAYER FOR THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness.

At your command, the sick were made well, come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick, with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.

Heal us from our fears, which prevents nations from working together, and neighbours from helping one another.

Heal us from our pride which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus.

May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.

Be with the families of those who are sick or have died.

As they worry and grieve defend them from illness and despair.

May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers, and all medical professionals

who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process.

Be with the leaders of all nations.

Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve.

Give them the wisdom to invest in long term solutions that will help prepare for, or prevent, future outbreaks.

May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few,

Lord Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare.

In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Lord Jesus Christ heal us.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour

Amen

Some Music, Readings and Prayers to Reflect upon during the Coronavirus Epidemic…

Some of us have found it really special in our present circumstances to read Psalm 121 and say The Lord’s Prayer at 11am every morning. At a time when we can’t join together for worship and our usual church activities, doing this has helped give us a sense of connectedness with each other, and reassurance that we are not on our own….

In addition to the Bible Reading and Prayer, some further prayers and music have been added below. These are offered on the basis that you can continue to read the Psalm and say The Lord’s Prayer as at present; or combine these with as many, or few, of the additional ‘extras’ – whatever works best for you….

You may wish to Light a Candle

in memory of:

all who have died,

those who are unwell,

and for all who grieve.

Lord, we ask that you let your light shine into the hearts of all,

help us all to feel your Holy presence,

as we pray:

Lord God, in a world that is full of pain and shock, hold us all close to you. So many lives have been cut short, so many fighting to breathe, so many mourn, and know the heartbreak of loss…. through your Holy Spirit, bring comfort and a deep peace upon Your world. A comfort with your love, wrap those who suffer in your strong embrace sheltering them from the storm – O Lord envelop us all in your tender loving care.

Amen

Psalm 121 (from the New International Version of the Bible)

I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip –

he who watches over you will not slumber:

indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you –

the Lord is your shade at your right hand,

the sun will nor harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm –

he will watch over your life,

the Lord will watch over your coming and going

both now and for evermore.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven

Hallowed by Thy Name,

Thy Kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.

For ever.

Amen

Fields of Plenty/Be Still my Soul

Amy Grant,

17 June 2009

(finishing with a short poem based on Psalm 37:4)

‘Be Still My Soul’

Be still my soul: the Lord is on your side;

bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

leave to your God to order and provide;

in every change, he faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly Friend

through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake

to guide the future as he has the past.

Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake,

all now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still my soul: the waves and winds still know

his voice, who ruled them while he lived below.

Be still my soul: when dearest friends depart

and all is darkened in the vale of tears,

who comes to soothe your sorrows, calm your fears.

then you shall better know his love, his heart,

Be still, my soul: for Jesus can repay

from his own fullness all he takes away.

Be still my soul: the hour is hastening on

when we shall be for ever with the Lord,

when disappointments, grief and fear are gone,

sorrow forgotten, love’s pure joy restored.

Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,

all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Prayer for our Church

(Prayers are particularly appreciated at this time, as with Daviot & Dunlichity we seek to discern the way forward for our Churches, according to God’s will, in preparation for a return to the Appeal Process, once the present lockdown ends…)

Gracious Lord, We thank you for all that is good in our situation:

  • For the fellowship

  • And the caring for each other

  • And our love for you.

  • For the privilege of reaching out to others in this place with the Good News of the Gospel.

  • For all the help and support given by our Interim Moderator

  • Helped by all the guest preachers who came each week to help us achieve this.

  • Not forgetting the organists.

Lord, we thank you for each and every one of them, and we thank you, too, for all the people in our congregation.

Help us to be good stewards of the resources we have, even if these are less than they were. Help us to do our bit in keeping the Church going by continuing to love and serve you, and by keeping alive the faith.

Lord, at this time our future as a congregation seems very uncertain, but remembering that we are a people of hope, who need to declare and model good news in difficult times – we pray that you will:- Keep us faithful and focussed; give us the strength and the ability to continue to work and serve you in this place; and keep us from becoming discouraged.

Help us to hear your voice over all the doubts and worry, and to seek your will for our situation with humility.

  • Help us to listen

  • To genuinely seek to discern your will for us and our situation.

  • To be faithful, and obedient.

And help all involved to genuinely work out, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, what it is we need to do, in this place, and throughout the Presbytery, to keep the Gospel alive to your glory.

Please bless, guard, guide, lead, direct and protect us all during this process.

May we feel your healing presence close beside us until we arrive at the point of
agreement you wish to see our congregations, and the Presbytery reach together. And when we get to this point, please give us the grace to accept your healing reconciliation, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

Amen

O sisters, let’s go down
Let’s go down, come on down
O sisters, let’s go down

Come on, brothers, let’s go down

God is our refuge and our strength,

Faceshields for the Community

SCD has obtained some faceshields which offer a pretty basic level of protection against transmission of the coronavirus. The frame has been 3D-printed locally and the transparent shield is cut from an A4 acetate sheet which is normally used to create overhead projection transparencies.   printed face shield

The shields are supplied in heat-sealed packs containing visor frame, 2 x transparent shield, and instructions. The packs are available from the shop, free of charge. We can print more if required.

Shields help protect the wearer’s face from body fluids such as coughs, sneezes and air-borne droplets. Users should use their own judgement as to whether it is adequate for the conditions. Better protection is obtained when worn in conjunction with a filter mask. Please be aware of the limitations of this form of PPE, but they but may be useful to folk that have to get closer than they wish to others for one reason or another.

Third Update from SCC & SCD

As the lockdown continues, it is anticipated that the restrictions will begin to bite, and government support may not yet be forth coming. Vulnerable or self-isolating people, those in a furlough situation, self-employed, out of work or on zero hours contracts may need financial support to tide them over.

The SCD and SCC have established the Covid 19 Resilience Fund (CRF) aimed at helping anyone who is suffering hardship or problems because of government restrictions and the “fall-out” of the pandemic. The CRF can provide grants or interest free loans to individuals to cover the cost of rent/mortgage payments (for your main home), phone/broadband bills, utilities, transport to essential appointments, emergency repairs/replacement in your home. All applications will be treated in confidence – we all find ourselves in very unusual unforeseen circumstances. We aim to make payments within 24 hours of receipt and approval of an application, though in some situations we may require further information. Payment will be made directly to your bank account. Application form available from SCD.

In addition, we are about to establish a “Community Larder” where food will be available 24 / 7 to take without charge (or donate) by anyone within the community. Paula is currently looking for a suitable shed or container that can be sited within the shop car park. Paula is also in negotiation with suppliers to see if the shop can provide advantageous “meal deal” and “dine-in” offers.

As mentioned last week, SCD and SCC have been applying for grants to help fund community initiatives that can assist those affected during the period. To date the SCD have been successful in obtaining an initial £500 from the Highland Council and we would like to thank our Councillors for their support. A further application was made by SCD to HIE for monies available from the government for third sector bodies (charities). We understand that the decision on the allocation was delayed due to Easter but we hope to receive a decision on our bid during the coming week. In the meanwhile we would like to hear from anyone who has any ideas that can help the community during the coming weeks.

We would also like to thank (amongst others) Good Highland Food and Cheese &Tomatin for their generous donation of food or ingredients to the community; Tomatin Glamping Pods who have offered the use of a pod to locals who needs to self -isolate away from their immediate family; Tracy Campbell for organising local takeaway deliveries and of course the whole community for pulling together at this time.

Foodbank Appeal from Blythswood

blythswood logo[Posted by request of Vivian Roden]

Dear Churches supporting Highland Foodbank

We are living in very uncertain times just now, and for some members and friends of your church it must be difficult not being able to physically meet together.

Highland Foodbank is very busy just now, feeding an average of 30 people on a daily basis in the Inverness & Nairn areas alone. We are keeping in line with our normal practice of receiving referrals form partnering agencies for people who are in financial crisis and have no food, nor money to buy any. Today we helped a mum and child who have had to flee their home due to domestic violence.

I’ve had a number of calls and emails asking what individuals and congregations can do to support Foodbank at this time, when people aren’t able to donate their usual food items on a Sunday.

With normal drop off points in communities not being available, people not wishing to visit the supermarket too frequently to purchase donations and the current unavailability of some products we are suggesting that if people would like to continue to donate to Highland Foodbank, they can do so financially, no matter how small the amount. This can be done through bank transfer, cheque (made payable to Blythswood Care, with a covering note to say that it is for Highland Foodbank) or via the Blythswood Care website. Cheques should be posted to the address below, and if anyone would like to do a bank transfer they can give us a call on either number below and we will let them have our account number and sort code. This money will be in lieu of food.

If your church uses social media, I’d be grateful if you could highlight this information.

Very many thanks and Happy Easter,

Lorna

Second Update from SCC & SCD

In last week’s update by the SCC and SCD, we indicated that we were meeting by video link on a regular basis to discuss potential areas where we could provide assistance to the community over this period of lockdown. We also mentioned that we were investigating additional areas of coronavirus resilience funding. Using video facilities the SCC and SCD met during the week and have decided to introduce the following additional initiatives :-

  • Using the Royal Mail computer application, the shop will commence to offer parcel posting facilities. This means that as of the middle of next week, residents will be able to take parcels to the shop where they will charge for and arrange postage. In addition the shop will retain a stock of postage stamps for letters. This action will enable us to overcome the recent removal of outreach Post Office services to the village.
  • Following discussions with Highland Home Care (HHC), SCD can offer to provide the use of HHC carers for any vulnerable resident who lose their support as a result of a spouse or family member becoming ill from Covid-19. As this is a short term expedient, it is possible to negate the initial Client requirements assessment (which can take up to 6 weeks) and implement an immediate caring package to suit individual needs. We would stress that this is for short term caring requirements and will not impact the normal the longer term carer provision.
  • A Community Covid Resilience fund has been established to help members of the community who as suffering as a consequence of furloughing, loss of job or being on a zero hours contract. The fund is to be used for the provision of grants or interest free loans depending of specific circumstances. This will not impact on the existing SCCT Hardship Fund. The Community Covid Resilience Fund is a separate fund focused solely on assisting people directly affected as a consequence of the coronavirus and government associated restrictions. However the fund will operate on a similar manner to the SCCT Hardship Fund, but will have a faster response time to applications. All applications will be treated in confidence by a small team from SCC, SCD and SCCT and no personal information on applicants or recipients will be made public. Consequently if you are affected please make initial contact by phoning 07594 305775.
  • It is recognised that during this period obtaining skilled tradesmen in the event of repair work being required. It is therefore intended to contact all local craftsmen and collate a directory of tradesmen / skilled workers within the area that are prepared to respond to emergency calls within the Strathdearn area. When complete, the directory will be posted within the website and a copy kept in the shop in order that it is available for local residents.

The SCD and SCC have applied for several sources of funding to meet with the community needs and we hope to be advised of the outcome of our applications within the coming week. Irrespective, we are progressing with the above initiatives to assist the community needs. If anyone within the community can think of any additional service(s) that the combined efforts of SCD and SCC can deliver please do not hesitate to contact us. In the interim please stay safe and we would remind you to phone 07594 305775 if we can assist you or anyone else in the community in any way.

Update from SCC and SCD

It is now nearly two weeks since the country entered a “lock down” situation and three weeks since the Community Council and Strathdearn Development Company started making arrangements to support community needs over the period of the pandemic. Unfortunately some of the decisions have been regrettable but necessary – closing the new Strathdearn Hall, postponing the opening of the restaurant and furloughing staff. However on a positive note we have managed to:

  • Maintain the community shop, albeit on reduced opening hours (due to restricted supplier deliveries and to protect staff members);Community COVID 19 1200x630
  • Establish an emergency phone contact to support vulnerable people and answer any queries on local arrangements;
  • Offer home delivery of groceries to people who are self-isolating, vulnerable or lack transport;
  • Provide credit facilities at the shop to those who cannot access funds;
  • Provide transport to individuals with specific needs;
  • Communicate with our Highland Councillors to ensure that the needs of Strathdearn are recognised, and
  • Maintain regular communication with the community through direct contact, Facebook and our Website

In addition we have applied through Highlands and Islands Enterprise for government grant funding to, amongst other things, establish a hardship fund in order to help anyone who is disadvantaged as a result of being furloughed or finds themselves unable to meet with everyday demands. We are also looking at any other source of grant funding that we can apply for on behalf of the community.

In addition to thanking our hard working staff, we are also grateful that local businesses have stepped up to help – Good Highland Foods and Tomatin Glamping Pods have both offered and provided assistance so far.

However we recognise that there are those in the community that require more and we would like to hear from you to see what we can do to help, whatever the situation. All calls will be treated in confidence so please do not hesitate to contact us on 07594 305775.
