FIFTH UPDATE FROM SCC & SCD

It’s 2 weeks since the last update by the Community Council and Development Company within the Newsletter. Whilst there has been little change over this period, we are starting the Scottish Government 3 phase unlocking process. Consequently we will see a number of changes coming over the next 6 weeks as we progress through phases 1 and 2 towards the new normal (whatever that looks like). Meanwhile we are continuing to support the community through the successful initiatives of :-

  • Subsidising shop food sales – although problems have been encountered with suppliers, Paula hasCorona updates managed to maintain the stock at a reasonable level as well as addition new lines, veg boxes, etc.;
  • Community Larder – the community have benefitted through availability of food on a 24 / 7 basis to everyone at no charge;
  • The Resilience Fund has provided several people with financial support where they have suffered hardship caused through lack of work, reduced working hours, etc.
  • The provision of travel where the reduced level of bus service has impacted on the travel to or for essential requirements;
  • Provided delivery services to self-isolating or vulnerable people;
  • Maintaining a 24/7 phone helpline

These initiatives are funded through third sector resilience funding provided by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Highland Council. Some funds are still available and initiatives will continue to run for the foreseeable future. We would therefore urge anyone who is or has suffered as a consequence of the pandemic to apply for support. All applications are treated in strictest confidence. Similarly, if anyone has any new ideas or initiatives that will benefit the community through these unusual time – please contact an SCD Board Member or phone 07594 305775. Any suggestions are welcome.

Strathdearn community facilities remain unavailable for use due to the need to control the pandemic. However, as we enter the phased release of lockdown restrictions we need to develop a strategy to commence the re-commissioning of these essential community facilities. Charles Morgan (Chief Operating Officer) is coming off furlough to commence this work. From Monday 1st June 2020, he will be looking at the options available to make use of the hall, re-locate the shop and commission the restaurant facilities in accordance with Government guidelines and timescales.

Further information will be released as and when decisions are made. Although open for casual use, the MUGA (the covered sports dome) can now also be used to play organised tennis – provided a few simple rules are followed closely.

Below is a copy of the rules and regulations governing the use for tennis. .

Two other matters are currently in hand :-

1. Wrap round child care post August 2020.

The Scottish Government passed legislation and provided councils with funding to extend early learning and childcare from the current 600 hours per child per year to 1140 hours in August 2020. The Highland Council decided to deliver the services in house, through their Education Department.

Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, The Highland Council has stated that they are unable to deliver this required level of service and it is unclear if the monies given to The Highland Council by Scottish Government will be made available as intended. They have however entered discussions with the Care and Learning Alliance (CALA) to see if they can continue to deliver the service within the Strathdearn area. CALA is a third sector body (i.e. a not for profit charity type organisation) and has successfully delivered childcare services in Strathdearn for some years now however, their services were due to be terminated in August when the Highland Council planned to take over.

The Childcare Group, the Strathdearn Community Charitable Trust, the Community Council and the Strathdearn Community Development Company are in discussion with Highland Council officers, our local Councillors and our MSP to try and resolve this matter to ensure community child care needs are met. Again we will keep you advised as soon as the matter has been resolved. We wish to thank Lianne Brunton for invaluable work on perusing this matter so diligently

2. Affordable housing in Tomatin

On a more positive note the Tenders from builders for the Affordable Housing project beside the railway bridge in Tomatin are to be submitted during the first week in June 2020. These Tenders will go through a formal evaluation process and checks before any decision is made. The community will be advised further as and when a decision is made. In the interim the SCD are in discussion with Tomatin Estates to formalise community ownership of the site.

Please also remember to enter our community competition.This can be done individually or as a family project, can include collages and 3D structures/sculptures, can have a theme, such as the image of a rainbow, Strathdearn’s landmarks and history, or just be about living through the restrictions.

  1. Children – Art, Story (video or written) Paper, pens and poster paint will be available in the shop from tomorrow if anyone needs some supplies.
  2. Adult – Art, Story (video, written – text or poem, photo)

Entries to the shop, posted on the Strathdearn Facebook page or by emailing scdassist@hotmail.com. A closing date and winners will be announced in due course and when restrictions lift we would love to hold an exhibition to showcase this local talent.

Return to Playing Tennis

We are anticipating a return to tennis this Friday, 29th May 2020 but like other outdoor activities (e.g. golf) this will not be confirmed by the First Minister until Thursday, 28th May 2020.

Similar to other outdoor sports, there are strict guidelines to follow and the full list of these can be found at https://www.lta.org.uk/globalassets/news/2020/guidance-for-tennis-venues–players-in-scotland—covid-19.pdf

A summary of the essential conditions is as follows :

  • 2m social distancing at all times;
  • Play should be singles ( different households allowed);
  • Doubles only permitted if players on the same team are from the same household;
  • Only use your own equipment;
  • Clearly mark your own tennis balls as you are only allowed to serve using balls belonging to you;
  • Do not pick up tennis balls belonging to anyone else;
  • Use your racquet or foot to hit or kick other balls to the appropriate person;
  • The net will be set at the correct height by an allotted person prior to play – so do not adjust;
  • Players should not change ends unless you walk round
    a different end of the net from your opponent;
  • Avoid physical contact, i.e. no shaking of hands etc.;
  • Clean and wipe down all equipment and water bottles before and after play;
  • Bring a hand sanitizer;
  • Do not congregate after play – go home.

The Covid Resilience Fund – Education Costs

The community resilience funds awarded to SCD has allowed the establishment of the The Covid Resilience Fund (applications available here), prompted initiatives such as the Community Larder, benefited all shop customers through the temporary discounting of fresh food from the shop and can be used to pay for community transport and handyperson jobs for the vulnerable.

We would like to highlight that the fund can also assist towards Education costs. Many parents in Strathdearn are home-schooling and using on-line resources. You may require help in covering costs, to pay for more internet/data or school stationary. In school, children have access to their own chrome books whereas now many children are sharing tablets or making use of their parent’s computers –chromebook opening them up to wear and tear! SCD is willing to purchase tablets or laptops to access school resources and can lend these out to households who may be interested. We would like to gauge interest in this so please let us know as soon as you can.

We also have a community-use laptop (purchased from previous awards) that is available to any adult in the community to borrow for personal development (maybe to complete an online course whilst being furloughed).

If you would like to discuss accessing funds for Education or borrowing a laptop please contact scdassist@hotmail.com.

We are continually looking for other ways to provide help and encourage community spirit so if you have any ideas, please let us know on 07594 305775.

Competition Time

The lockdown has brought out lots of creativity in the village. We’ve enjoyed seeing all the painted stones, posters of rainbows in the windows, bunnies along the side of the road and kindness trees decorated for the NHS and for springtime. Thanks to all those involved in these great projects to brighten up our village.

OIP4IWZ4TFW

We’d like to make this into a wider community competition in conjunction with the Strathdearn Art Group and the Natural History Club.

This can be done individually or as a family project:

  1. Children – Art, Short Story (video or written) This could be a painting or a collage. A4 paper, pens and poster paint are available in the shop if anyone needs some supplies.

      Categories: Up to age 5, age 6 – 10 and age 11 – 16.

  1. Adult – Art, Short Story* (video, written – text or poem, photo)

These can include 3D structures/sculptures in whatever materials are available (for example, some communities have had Scarecrows sitting in the garden, or community benches).

*There is no stipulated length however, please bear in mind that for judging and later viewings the filmed and written pieces cannot be too long.

Sadly, the Strathdearn Art group probably won’t be able to run their art show this year and would love to see everyone’s work. We know several children have been creating their own short videos of their experiences during lockdown. Since the local natural history club have long since been recording history in the area they would love to see what has been created.

The piece can have a theme, such as the image of a rainbow, include aspects of Strathdearn’s landmarks and history, or just be about living through a lockdown – a piece of history in itself.

Entries

These can be handed into the shop, posted onto the Strathdearn Facebook page or by emailing scdassist@hotmail.com. A closing date and winners will be announced in due course.

At the end of lockdown, at such a time when The Strathdearn is re-opened, SCD would love to hold an exhibition to showcase this local talent with the Art and Natural History Club.

Good Luck!!

Council support to families in time of need

Help is at hand for bereaved families in Highland who may find the unexpected cost of funerals out of their reach during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Highland Council has provided funeral directors in the region with information leaflets to ensure that they are aware of the financial support that is available to relatives for some funeral costs in specific circumstances.
Depending on the individual circumstances of bereaving families, help may be available through the ‘Bereavement Support Payment’ and ‘Funeral Support Payment’.
The support is free and confidential, and the Welfare Support Team can be contacted by emailing: welfare.support@highland.gov.uk or by phoning 0800 090 1004.
Contact can also be made by completing a secure online form at www.highland.gov.uk/welfaresupport

Tomatin project will benefit community for ‘years to come’

With many construction projects currently on hold, there is light at the end of the tunnel for community development projects as The Highland Council opens a new round of applications for the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund.

Developed in partnership with the Scottish Government, the fund has been running since 2014, helping to deliver locally developed regeneration projects for the benefit of communities, job creation and in building sustainable communities.

To date, the grant has been awarded to 12 projects throughout the Highlands and Islands. Many are completed or ongoing and include Midmills Creative Hub, which received a £1,200,000 grant; Armadale Redevelopment, with a £311,652 grant; Eigg Community Hub redevelopment, with a £1,200,000 grant; and Merkinch Welfare Hall, which received a grant of £200,127.

Strathdearn Community Developments Company received a £500,000 grant towards the £2.5million cost of a new community hub, alongside the refurbishment of the old hall into a community shop and restaurant.

The new complex is aimed to be multi-functional and for the benefit of the community for generations to come.

Completed in October 2019, ‘The Strathdearn’, as it has been named, is set in Tomatin. It consists of a spacious hall hosting a range of community groups and acting as a venue for events from weddings to community council meetings, conferences to concerts and ceilidhs to exhibitions and film screenings.

There are a number of other rooms for hire, as well as an office space, kitchen and covered sports area. The hub is also gearing up for the opening of the shop and restaurant.

The new hub aims to be the centrepiece of Strathdearn Community Developments Company’s vision for Tomatin. The plan is ever evolving as consultation with local wishes is an important part of developments, however the vision includes the creation of job opportunities, care at home for the vulnerable, affordable housing, improvement of facilities and services, and inward investment.

Tomatin’s location off the A9 provides numerous opportunities. By improving infrastructure and building ‘The Strathdearn’ brand, the company aims to attract tourists and encourage locals to stay in the community.

Complementing the creation of the hub, a number of projects have been identified for development over the short term. The village shop has been purchased to ensure an important service is maintained, a Care in the Community team has been formed to serve elderly and infirm residents, new walking paths have been developed and the overall attractiveness of the village has been improved with planters, benches, signage and a children’s play area.

Although physical developments in Tomatin were important, digital advances were also a key part of the project.

As well as installing Superfast Broadband to 83 houses with more to follow, the community aspect of the project continues online. A website and Facebook page provide updates on local groups, activities and events including ceilidhs, festivals and wedding fairs.

“There are always opportunities for the community to get-together and reasons to be proud of the village,” said Charles Morgan, chief operating officer of Strathdearn Community Developments.

“Without the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, the Hub would simply not exist. Although as a community we have always had a strong bond, having a physical place to meet really makes a difference. It means we can come together as a community and get to know each other and support each other much better.”

Community groups and organisations interested in applying for Round 8 of the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund can submit an expression of interest form on The Highland Council website, which will be used to develop an application should they meet the relevant criteria.

Leader of the council Margaret Davidson said: “Since being introduced the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund has proved to be a very good stream of funding for projects supporting the growth of our communities. Highland applications have been successful and projects already completed or underway are making a real difference by creating jobs and boosting local economies.

“Strathdearn Community Developments Company is a great example of the possibilities available when a community comes together so well done to everyone involved. I am delighted that support is available for other fragile communities in the Highlands keen to tackle inequality and support inclusive growth. By working now to address inequality and support, we can secure the future of our region for years to come.”

Moy Matters #9 May 2020 Newsletter

MOY MATTERS (10)

The MSC last met in February so there is little to update as far as progress is concerned.

  1. The fence at the wooden railway bridge has now been repaired and a couple of stiles are in place should anyone want to get closer to view the bridge without causing further damage to the fence.

  2. Moy FB page: Please ‘like’ us and join our FB page if you haven’t already done so – it is a good way to keep in touch. Feel free to post. Also if you are out and about and take photos in our lovely area, we would love to see them.

  3. Planters: Can we ask that everyone keeps a regular check on the planters and the plants and if ever there is a problem please let us know. Unfortunately with the schools closed, the planters haven’t had any new flowers added. If anyone has any spare plants please feel free to add them or let a member of the MSC know and we will get digging.

We hope that everyone is coping in these unprecedented times and if anyone is needing a hand with shopping, dogs or remote support if just needing a friendly ear, please get in touch.

If you want to contribute or give any feedback, please feel free to contact any of the sub-committee members at any time. The members are Marian Hendry (Chair, marian.hendry@talk21.com), Alastair Fraser (vice chair), Davie Cameron, John Clarke, Jimmy Duncan and Linda Armit.
