On Sunday, April 28, 2024, 3B Catering Ltd will cease operations of the cafe and shop at The Strathdearn in Tomatin.
White River Trading (WRT) recognises the importance of the shop and cafe to the Strathdearn community, and remains committed to providing these services going forward.
For nearly two years, 3B Catering has operated the 3 Bridges Cafe at The Strathdearn and, in November 2022, extended its remit to include the shop.
Since its inception, the shop has not generated the required level of turnover to be viable as a self-sustaining service, but it has been recognised as a vital community resource. Under charity regulations, Strathdearn Community Developments (SCD) – a charitable organisation, and the parent company of WRT – cannot subsidise the running of the shop as the basis of its operation.
Early attempts to run the shop and cafe individually were unsuccessful, so 3B Catering brought the two together in 2022 to keep both open and available for the community.
Over the last year, spiralling energy costs have added increased pressure on the business, despite support from WRT through periodic rent concessions. With the current lease due to expire in September 2024, WRT is unable to enter into discussions about future leases this far in advance. With this unknown, 3B Catering deemed it not viable to pursue investment in developing the business or seeking funding options. As a result, 3B Catering decided that it cannot continue to operate the shop and cafe in the current climate.
Charlotte Kennerley, owner of 3B Catering, said: “I wish to thank my loyal staff for their extremely hard work over the period, and thank you to the community for your support throughout the time we have run the cafe and shop.”
The WRT board added: “We would like to thank Charlotte and the team at 3B Catering for everything they have done in the cafe and shop over the last two years, providing services for locals and visitors alike.”
Moving forward, SCD and WRT have been working with a third party adviser to assess the viability of running the shop and cafe in-house, and to compare its operations to other similar businesses in the Highlands. As a result, WRT intends to operate the cafe and shop going forward, and more information will be announced in due course.
While every effort will be made to provide continuity for the community, during the transition from 3B Catering to WRT there may be some minor disruption including temporary closure of the shop and cafe. However, efforts will be made to run a reduced shop service within The Strathdearn during this time, if possible.
SCD and WRT appreciate your patience while the new operation is put in place to continue providing this vital service to the Strathdearn community.

Dear Strathdearn Community Council,
I hope that this email finds you well.
We are writing with a short update on the Clune Wind Farm proposal and to inform you that the exhibition events for 18 March and 19 March have been postponed. We apologise for the short notice and the postponement and RES has sent a new mailout to all households who received the original invitation to highlight that the events will not go ahead next week. The RES team will still be at the Strathdearn Hub and Carrbridge Village Hall on the dates of the original events in case any residents do arrive in order to meet them, explain the postponement and discuss any aspects of the project at this early stage.
RES is currently reviewing the project programme and will write to the local community with more details as soon as they are confirmed. In the meantime, more information on the project can be found at www.clune-windfarm.co.uk. While we are at an early stage of the development process, it is important to us that we put forward what we think is the best possible design for the scheme before asking people to provide feedback on the proposals. We appreciate everyone’s time is valuable and we look forward to engaging with the local community on our plans in due course.

I hope that this email finds you well. We are writing to provide a short update on activity relating to the Clune Wind Farm proposal and to invite community councillors to the first round of public exhibition events, planned for 18 and 19 March 2024.
Public Exhibition Events – March 2024
RES will be holding public exhibition events for the Clune Wind Farm as follows:
The Strathdearn Hub, Tomatin, IV13 7YN
Monday 18 March 2024, 2pm – 8pm
Carrbridge Village Hall, Main Road, Carrbridge, PH23 3AA
Tuesday 19 March 2024, 2pm – 8pm
The events are drop-in at any time. For those unable to attend the exhibitions in-person, the exhibition boards and feedback form will be available from Monday 18 March on the project website at: www.clune-windfarm.co.uk
RES will place adverts for the events in the Strathspey Herald and Inverness Courier and also send out invitations to households and businesses near the proposed site. We’ve attached a copy of the poster if the Community Council would like to consider sharing it on any social media channels to highlight the exhibition events.
Project Update
The proposal, located approximately 5.5km south of Tomatin, is currently for 27 turbines up to 200m to tip in height and with a capacity of approximately 194MW. RES is accepting comments from this consultation round until 18 April and then expects to hold a second round of exhibitions in late Summer 2024 (after the school holidays).
The proposal includes a proposed community benefit package of £5,000 per MW of installed capacity (index linked), which would generate just under £1,000,000 per annum for the lifetime of the project and RES would welcome the chance to explore shared ownership opportunities of the development.
RES has recently become members of Highland Renewables and in February 2024 announced a partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) to support a minimum of 60 students through their Student Development Fund. RES wants to work with the local supply chain to deliver the wind farm if consented and will organise Meet the Developer events as the project progresses – if you know of any local businesses interested in getting involved, please highlight the contact details via the project website or pass on this email.

Dear All,
I am writing to inform you of a new project due to commence in April 2024 to replace the AGL system at Inverness Airport. The AGL system, which must comply with Civil Aviation (CAA) regulations, provides visual guidance to pilots during landing, taxiing and take-off.
The project will see £4m invested by HIAL towards the replacement of the current AGL system. The replacement will have more energy-efficient lighting, with potential savings of up to 80% in energy consumption. The project will ensure that Inverness Airport continues to support social and business travel and support lifeline services for the local community.
The replacement AGL LED lights will include work on:
· Runway 23 approach lights
· The main runway edge, threshold and stop-end lights
· Associated primary and secondary cabling
· Associated foundations, plinths, mounts and masts
·
The contract to complete the work was awarded to G&A Barnie after a procurement process and is due to be completed by mid-September 2024. The work will take place during day and night-time hours, with no impact on the airport’s flight schedule. It is not anticipated that the work will generate any additional noise or disturbance.
As the work progresses, we will be updating our Inverness Airport website with photos and information on the project.

What’s been going on?
We are pleased to share the news of our exciting community projects! For updates on the renewables project at the Hub, café and shop, the Strathdearn Community Kids Club, information about upcoming community events and more, read on!
Community Led Affordable Housing
Thanks to all the members who were able to attend the AGM in January.
As advised at the AGM, Community Led Affordable Housing is still an active project that SCD wish to deliver, despite the multiple challenges.
Our budget has been programmed to take this forward into 2025/26. Most of us will be aware of the economic constraints on grant funding as these pots of money get smaller and communities in general have greater needs. The Scottish Government has reduced £200 million from its affordable housing budget which is likely to have some impact outwith our control.
However, we recognise the importance of access to good quality affordable tenures is still high on the community’s agenda, and we will look to explore the possibility of delivering the project in phases, once planning is completed.
Dalarossie Church
A business plan is currently being developed and will be shared with the community to discuss at the next EGM all the different options. The date for the EGM will be announced in due course.
Renewables Project for The Strathdearn Hub and Shop/Café (solar panels & battery storage for the hub/shop/café)
SCD are delighted to advise the community that the work to install solar panels and battery storage is on its way!
Following the issuing of the building warrant the proposed itinerary is below. This may be subject to slight changes if the weather becomes inclement, but we hope to have this up and running towards the end of March.
Next week will see the scaffolding towers being erected around the Strathdearn Hub.
Installation of solar panels at the Strathdearn Hub, Shop and Café is commencing Monday 11th March 2024.
There will also be short interruptions of electricity supply towards the end of the install at the hub, shop, and café to allow the electrical work to take place. We do not foresee these to be long spells of disruption. However, we will try and keep everyone up to date as much as possible before hand.
We appreciate for the next 3 weeks or so this will cause a bit of disruption to car parking, and the immediate surrounding area of the Hub itself, followed by the Shop and Café.

Electric Vehicle Upgraded Replacement Chargers
Lease arrangements are taking longer than anticipated along with the pursuit of the relevant consents. All parties thought commencement could start in early 2024. However, until these are completed the works cannot be programmed in.
Findhorn Watershed Initiative (FWI)
It’s great to see the different trips, information and ongoing work the Findhorn Initiative is conducting within Strathdearn highlighting our amazing natural resources.
This theme continues with an event being held on Saturday 16th March 2024 with special guest Julie Fowlis at The Strathdearn Hub. The FWI team would love for local folk to take advantage of event. It is jam packed with Gaelic history, world class music, and much more!

Cruth na tìre air a doimhneachd – A landscape by its depth
An evening of stories, songs and music exploring the cultural expressions of the upper reaches of the River Findhorn Watershed; from the source to the Streens.
Fairy songs, love songs, work songs and bright fiddle strathspeys and reels from Gaelic tradition – inspired by the landscapes and stories of our River’s headwaters, unearthed from the depths of the Archives and brought back to life by esteemed musicians.
This event is a culmination and celebration of a 6-month journey of cultural research and engagement in the upper catchment of the River Findhorn, by Human Ecologists Raghnaid Sandilands and Mairi McFadyen. Each guest will receive a printed artefact mapping the lost songs and tunes of this place, calling us forth to share and steward them into the future.

The intent is to refer to this registry for smaller-scale jobs without the need for tendering to expedite the more minor repairs and maintenance required within the community.

Strathdearn Community Kids Club
The Strathdearn Community Kids Club is well underway having now been up and running for over a month. We welcome to the team Neil Davidson as assistant coach. Neil is in his 4th year of his Sport and Fitness honours degree at UHI and brings an abundance of football coaching knowledge to the football sessions having assisted for two years with Inverness Caley Thistle Football Club youth coaching. We also welcome to the team Megan whom residents may know from the Zumba / stretch and flex classes on a Wednesday evening at the Strathdearn Hub. Megan will be providing cover if needed to allow continuity of the club during holidays / sickness.
Thanks to the additional staffing we can double the number of children registered for the walking transport agreement from the school to the Hub, as well as slightly increasing the total number attending. As we reach warmer months, the club will be able to use the outdoor MUGA as well as the auditorium for longer spells meaning that the number of children attending can be further increased – in the hope of further reducing the current waiting list.

Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Ride Leader Training
Congratulations to the Strathdearn residents who successfully completed Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Ride Leader training on Friday 23rd February!
This course teaches the skills necessary for leaders to plan and organise rides within an organisation, community group or club.
Big thanks to the instructor Tom, and to Visit Inverness Loch Ness who co-funded the course alongside SCD grant funding.
