The podcast has been created as an additional way to keep local residents informed about the proposed development, explain how the project has evolved, and provide an opportunity for the community to hear directly from members of the project team.

Selected recordings may be featured in a future podcast episode, where members of the project team will respond directly to community questions and feedback.

We have been concentrating recently on the illegal use of off-road bikes, drug issues, road safety and conducting action days across our areas. Recently we have welcomed PC Kirsteen Macdonald into our Community Beats Team. She is working alongside PC Gibb which has allowed us to extend our cover in the rural areas. We have also had Inverness Response Officers seconded to Community for short periods which has been of huge benefit to us as a team and helps them have an insight into our role and how they can use Community Beats knowledge when they return to response. The lighter nights are now here so we are also focusing on areas likely to experience anti-social behaviour.
The consultation for the Strathdearn Local Place Plan closes on 12 June 2026 at 4pm (for paper forms) and 23:59 (for online and emailed feedback).
Strathdearn’s new community-led plan will be used to guide community action and community spending over the next five years, to 2031.
Please tell us what you think about the proposed facilities, services, and development/use of land/buildings in the Proposed Plan, so we can take your comments into account while finalising the Plan for submission to the Council at the end of June.

Opening Ceremony for Community Affordable Homes
As many of you will know, the new community homes have been a long-term ambition for Strathdearn. These homes have only been made possible thanks to the incredible support of our funders, partners, and stakeholders over the years, and we are so proud to see them now lived in and enjoyed by local people.
To mark this very special milestone for both our community and everyone who helped bring the project to life, we will be holding a short official opening ceremony on:

Pupils from Strathdearn Primary School will be helping to cut the ribbon, and there may be some media and a local photographer present to capture the moment – a celebration of what a small community can achieve together.

Hazelbank Woodland🌿 What’s been going on?
Recent weeks have seen steady progress in Hazelbank Community Woodland, with a range of positive work underway.
Highland Council Nature Restoration Project
We’ve been working with the nursery to sow native wildflowers and grasses in our newly prepared beds in the woodland. This project aims to increase biodiversity and create a richer habitat for wildlife. It’s been great working the children who have been discovering different plant and insects varieties and supplied us with some lovely art work reflecting this to pop around the newly sown area.
In the woodland just now you’ll find lovely pockets of wood sorrel, violets and wood anemone brightening up the ground under the trees.
We have recently begun an Arboricultural Survey to look at tree health within the woodland, carried out by Andrew Potter. This focuses on the mature trees in higher-use amenity areas. As a result, some tree maintenance work may be required, but we will keep the community fully updated of any actions needed.
Encouragingly, there have been sightings of ground-nesting birds within the woodland. This is wonderful news and a sign that the area is supporting local wildlife. We kindly ask all visitors to be mindful of this, especially when walking dogs, and to keep them under close control during the summer months.
Unfortunately, dog mess continues to be an ongoing issue within the woodland. This space is shared by the whole community, including the school and nursery, and dog fouling has affected these groups. While we have looked into installing dog bins, this would come at a cost to the community. There are existing bins located near both entrances to the wood – Old Mill Road (at the park and next to the post box), the Hub and Ard Park. We ask all dog owners could please clean up after their pets and follow a “leave no trace” approach.
Some of you may have noticed an IBC unit installed in the recently planted Fruit and Nut area. This will allow the children to water and care for the heritage apple trees they helped plant. Volunteers have clad the IBC with pallets, and with support from John Orr, the after-school club will be transforming it into a creative “five-star hotel” for bugs and beasties.
It’s also worth a wee visit to see the first apple blossom from our early cropper, Tom Putt. The rest won’t be far behind if we get a bit more sunshine and warmer weather.

We know how tricky it can be for families to plan ahead for the summer holidays, so we worked early with High Life Highland to confirm the dates as soon as possible to help everyone plan ahead.
High Life Highland have not yet confirmed pricing, and bookings are currently not open – but we will share all the details with the community as soon as they are available.
A 50% SCD subsidy will be available for IV13 residents.
Kidz Club (term-time only)
As the warmer weather arrives this term, the coaches have been making the most of being outdoors with the children, introducing fun new activities including pickleball and disc golf — both of which have been a huge hit! ☀️🏓🥏
We are also excited to welcome back John Orr, the Countryside Ranger, who will be teaming up with Louise, our Woodland Coordinator, to run a special session building a BUG HOTEL in Hazelbank Woods — very exciting! 🐞🌿

Open to all families with an IV13 postcode, Kidz Club runs every Wednesday from 3:15pm – 6:00pm. It’s a great chance for children to unwind, get active, and have fun in a safe, friendly environment.
With healthy snacks provided and no screen time, sessions are packed with activities including games, sports, Lego, crafts, and plenty of free play.
Plus, enjoy special visits from High Life Highland Countryside Rangers, where children can learn about local wildlife and nature in a hands-on, engaging way.

Strathdearn Primary School at The Snug
We were delighted to welcome pupils from Strathdearn Primary School at the Snug on last Friday with their chosen books!
It’s a joy to see different generations of Strathdearn coming together through reading, with older members of our community sharing their time, encouragement and experience with the younger ones.
These sessions will help build the pupils’ confidence and nurture a lifelong enjoyment of reading — and the warmth and support of the community makes it all the more special.
The students will be joining us for the final Friday Snug of each month from 11.30am–12pm.

May has continued to be an extremely busy and positive month for Tastes of Tomatin Café & Shop, with both footfall and takings continuing to trend strongly upwards as the tourism season gets fully underway. Figures remain significantly ahead of the same period last year, reflecting continued growth across the business.
Alongside the increase in visitors, we continue to see exceptionally strong support from local workmen, particularly on Friday mornings. While this trade remains hugely important to the café, the tendency for large groups to arrive at once places considerable pressure on the kitchen and front of house operations during peak breakfast periods, something we continue to find workable solutions for.
Menu Performance
The simplified menu introduced earlier in the year continues to perform extremely well, both operationally and commercially.

🥪 Strong demand for sandwiches and grab-and-go items
🍰 Homemade baking remains extremely popular although difficult to keep up with
The streamlined offering is proving both profitable and more manageable during an exceptionally busy trading period.
Operational Changes
Operationally the business continues to face significant challenges due to staffing pressures and the sheer volume of trade now being experienced daily.
As a result, Mondays have moved to reduced operations, with the kitchen closed while still offering:
✔️ Homemade sausage rolls
✔️ Sandwiches
✔️ Cakes and traybakes
✔️ Hot drinks
All prepared in advance the previous evening and baked fresh on the day.
This change has proven to be both operationally necessary and commercially important. Reduced Monday operations have allowed essential members of the team to take much-needed time off while also creating valuable time for preparation, cleaning, and operational catch-up.
Encouragingly, despite the reduced offering, Monday takings have remained extremely strong with very little noticeable decline in customer demand. This continued support from both locals, workmen and visitors is playing a hugely important role in allowing the café to continue operating sustainably under current pressures.
Staffing Update
The arrival of new chef Chris Junor has helped ease some of the operational pressure within the kitchen and wider operation. Joining an exceptionally busy environment with extended service periods and very limited designated preparation time has presented a significant challenge, but Chris has already become a welcome addition to the team.
Over time, it is hoped that his impact will allow the café to become better equipped to deal with ongoing operational pressures and help reduce some of the current staffing shortages in key areas.
Despite this improvement, staffing remains a troublesome at times and the overall workload across the café, kitchen, and shop continues to be extremely high.
Community Support & Events
The café was pleased to support the SCD Fun Run on 23rd May, providing burgers and refreshments for those attending the event. The day was very well received and represented another positive example of the café continuing to support local community events.
Ongoing involvement with SCD activities remains both highly valued by the team and an important additional revenue stream for the business.
The café has also continued to regularly provide catering support for local groups and businesses, including smaller lunches and catering orders, all of which contribute positively to the overall operation.
Supper Club Update
The monthly Supper Club continues to evolve as the team works to establish the best long-term format for the event. While recent evenings have varied in attendance, feedback from those who have attended has remained extremely positive, with customers continuing to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and home-cooked offering. The team is continuing to assess how best to structure an evening supper offering that can consistently attract sufficient footfall to be commercially sustainable while remaining appealing to customers.

Customer feedback overall remains exceptionally encouraging, both in person and online.

Join the Board!
We are looking for new volunteers to join the Strathdearn Community Development / White River Trading boards. If you care about what is happening locally and want to help shape future projects, we would love to hear from you!
The commitment is now very manageable — just a 2hour meeting every two months, along with keeping on top of emails between meetings. No special experience needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to share your ideas.
We are particularly keen to welcome younger adults and more women onto the board so we can make sure a wide mix of voices and perspectives are represented when making decisions for our community.

What a tremendous job the After School Club did turning our IBC water unit into a five-star bug hotel! The children gathered up natural materials from the woods and working together they created a wonderful new home for all sorts of minibeasts.
We also had a bug hunt with John Orr, Highland Highlife Outdoor Ranger, who helped us explore and discover what was living around the site. The highlight of the afternoon was when one of the children found a four spotted chaser dragonfly – a very exciting find and a great reminder of why it’s so important to create and look after habitats for wildlife.
A huge well done to all the children for their hard work, enthusiasm and teamwork. What a great afternoon outdoors!
[The following email was received by SCC from Julie Aitken of Nadara energy company]
Following on from previous contact regarding Farr Wind Farm located approximately 3.7km from the village of Farr and 5.6km from Tomatin to the east, I would like to advise that are preparing to submit an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Scoping Report to the Scottish Government Energy Consents Unit for our proposals to extend Farr Wind Farm.
We are exploring the potential to develop up to ten turbines, each with a maximum tip height of up to 200 meters, potentially generating over 67MW of renewable electricity. However, this may change in response to the findings of our environmental assessments and community comments.
We would like to start a conversation with the local community and key stakeholders about how we make sure our plans are informed by their feedback. We will be hosting our first public consultation events locally in June. These are scheduled to take place:
Tuesday 16th June, 9:30am – 5pm, Farr Community Hall
These events will be advertised locally and further information will be available at www.farrwindfarm.co.uk. I have also enclosed a poster advertising the events – if you are able to share this on your social media channels, that would be greatly appreciated.
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the proposals in more detail and I hope that we will have the opportunity to meet at the public exhibitions. In the meantime, should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
We are sending this email in the hope that between everyone we can arrange for good future access to the cairn and grave of the living man. These are well known and documented areas of historical importance and we believe that history should be kept alive for future generations hence why these two areas have been marked.
To help enable this, as the A9 dualling is well under way and the new improved access now started we would like to see if we can somehow come together and arrange an area around the upgraded entrance for a few cars to park so people can walk in to the cairn.
Currently people park in front of the double gate or on the grass verge of the dual carriageway which is not safe and so if there was an area that could be open and big enough for 4 to 5 cars, rough ground, unofficial car park, park at own risk signs displayed etc then that would be suitable.
We hope that between everyone we can come together to help protect and preserve and promote the history of the local area to both locals and tourists.

We are now half-way through the Proposed Strathdearn Local Place Plan consultation, but there’s still lots of time for you to send us any comments you have on the proposed facilities, services, and the development/use of land/buildings in Strathdearn.
Our new community-led plan covers the period from 2026-2031, so now is the ideal time for you to submit any thoughts you have, for example, for a skate park in the Strathdearn area, so they can be taken into account when the plan is finalised for submission to the Council at the end of June.
You can use our free-text comments form, or you can use our feedback form that has been designed to gather information against a set of questions. Both forms are also available in paper copy from the Local Place Plan display in The Strathdearn foyer.
The Proposed Strathdearn Local Place Plan consultation closes at 4pm (for paper forms) and 23:59 (for online and emailed feedback) on 12 June 2026.
With this glorious sunshine, there were some lovely little finds in Hazelbank today – greater stitchwort, chickweed wintergreen, bog cotton and speedwell.
