MacBean of Tomatin Estate, Freeburn Hotel, 1873 (HCA/D104/1/5).
We are pleased to have within the holdings of the Highland Archive Centre the MacBean of Tomatin Estate and Family Records covering 1677-1908 (HCA/D104).
The Tomatin Estate is located in the parish of Moy and Dalarossie in the County of Inverness. Tomatin was granted to Bean MacBean in 1639 by a Charter of the Earl of Moray. The descendants of Bean MacBean, such as Ludovick MacBean, were competent business men with business dealings that stretched from Glasgow to the West Indies and South America.
One of the items within the estate records is a plan for the Freeburn Hotel. From the four images, you will see that the hotel had a total of 14 bedrooms, but with only one bathroom – a far different situation to today when hotel patrons expect to have en suite facilities! Persons staying at the hotel would likely fish in the River Findhorn for salmon and trout. The hotel closed in 1967 when it was sold to the Tarbat Estate Development Company.
