As part of our ongoing commitment to engage with the local community, we are writing to advise you of temporary traffic management being implemented on the A9 trunk road between Tomatin and Moy to allow us to safely undertake further site establishment works.
To ensure the safety of road users and our workforce, overnight traffic signals and a temporary 30mph speed restriction will be implemented for 2 weeks commencing 6 January 2025. The traffic management is required to enable site clearance and site access works to be undertaken. Once in place, the site accesses will have minimal impact on the operation of the A9, with works vehicles using these accesses prohibited from making right turns.
The temporary traffic management will involve overnight traffic signals on the A9 with a temporary speed restriction of 30mph throughout the works area. To minimise traffic disruption, working hours will be between 1930hrs and 0600hrs each night between Sunday night and Friday morning. There will be no works on Friday or Saturday nights.
It is expected that traffic management will be implemented on the A9 commencing on the evening of Monday 06 January 2025 for approximately two weeks.
In addition to these temporary traffic measures, layby 160SB on the southbound A9, located approximately 200m north of Tomatin, will be closed from Monday 06 January 2025. This layby will be used to process and load timber from the felled trees to the north during the site clearance works and will be closed to road users for their safety and the safety of our workforce. The location of the layby to be closed is shown in the image below. This layby is expected to remain closed from January 2025 until the completion of the main works.
These works are weather dependent, and scheduled dates are subject to change.
We would advise that you plan your journey and drive with care on approach to the area between Tomatin and Moy whilst traffic management is in place. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
We recognise that these works may temporarily increase noise levels in the immediate surrounding area. To keep disturbance to a minimum, we will utilise best practice methods of working, for example, using low noise reversing alarms on machinery and briefing staff on the importance of keeping noise levels to a minimum.
All works undertaken are subject to consultation with and approval from the Local Authority and the Local Authority Environmental Services before being implemented. As part of this approvals process, we are required to provide justification to Local Authorities including details of the reasons for working at night, the timing of works and the measures we plan to take to minimise disturbance to our neighbours.

Winter Shutdown
The site will close over the Christmas holiday period between Friday 20 December and Monday 6 January. During this period, all traffic management measures will be removed and be reinstated upon return to work in January. Capital Projects
Community-Led Affordable Housing:
We received five submissions to formally quote via the tender process for the community housing project. The evaluations have been completed and a preferred bidder for the contract has been identified. All of the contractors who submitted a quote have been notified.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to all who submitted a quote. It is a lengthy procedure due to the nature of the process to satisfy accessing public funding.
Hazelbank Woods:
Following last month’s update, we are very close to concluding the purchase of Hazelbank as it enters its final stages of the legal process. We are continually very grateful for the goodwill that all parties involved continue to show towards this important community project.
Dalarossie Church:
The Church of Scotland has advised us of a closing date at 12 noon on the 10th December 2024. SCD has submitted an offer, along with a strong supporting statement for community ownership. The outcome is now with the Church of Scotland for a decision.
Electric Vehicle Upgraded Charging Points
We are delighted to report that all EV chargers are up and running following some setbacks earlier on in the project.
Youth, Health & Wellbeing
Bookbug Joins Strathdearn Baby and Toddler Group:
We were thrilled to have Bookbug attend our Strathdearn Baby and Toddler Group this month! The session, run by the talented staff from Highlife Highland’s library service, captivated our little ones with engaging storytelling, songs, and puppets.
Bookbug is a fantastic scheme funded by the Scottish Book Trust and promotes sharing stories to help nurture children’s language, social skills, and overall development.
Additionally, we have set up a library account for the toddler group. At each Bookbug session, the staff will bring along a selection of books. Books that have been finished can be brought in and swapped for new ones! If there’s a specific book that isn’t available in the library, it can be reserved online and be sent from other libraries across the Highlands.
The Strathdearn Baby and Toddler Group meets every Thursday morning at The Strathdearn from 09:30 to 11:30 am – feel free to drop in at any time. The next Bookbug session is January 9th.

⚽ Parents Invited to Join in Football Sessions! ⚽
We received some great feedback from parents who would love to join in the football sessions with the kids—and the kids are excited about it too! 😊
We have checked with the Highlife coaches, and they’re happy for this to go ahead (just no side tackles on the children, please!). We’ll be trialling this in the upcoming sessions starting 11th December.
Highlife will also organise all the necessary PVGs for free, so everyone can join safely.

The SCD Snug hosted at The Strathdearn Hub:
Warm up this month at The SCD Snug, hosted at The Strathdearn Hub! Drop by for a free bowl of soup with a fresh roll – a perfect way to cosy up as the days get colder and darker. It’s also a great opportunity to catch up with fellow locals!
In addition to soup, we offer tea, coffee, biscuits, and fresh fruit, along with the day’s newspapers for a relaxing break.
The Snug is open every Tuesday and Friday from 10am to 4pm.

Further to our communication last month, we are writing to advise you of traffic management being implemented on the A9 trunk road between Tomatin and Moy to allow us to safely undertake site establishment works.
To facilitate the main construction works, and to ensure the safety of road users and the workforce, traffic management is required to form site access points. These accesses will allow workers, plant and materials to safely access the construction areas. Once constructed, they will have minimal impact on the operation of the A9.
Traffic management will involve temporary traffic signals with a temporary speed restriction of 30mph throughout the works area. To minimise traffic disruption, working hours will be between 1930hrs and 0600hrs each night between Sunday night and Friday morning. There will be no works during the day or on Friday or Saturday nights.
It is expected that these overnight traffic management measures will be implemented on the A9 commencing Sunday 1 December 2024 for approximately one week.
Temporary traffic signals are expected to be required again on the A9 in January 2025 and February2025 and further information will be provided on these nearer the time.

The Strathdearn Hub, Tomatin, Inverness IV13 7YN Friday, December 6 , 7 – 9pm GMT, tickets £12.
An interactive and entertaining evening for community members who live in and nearby to the River Findhorn watershed area, including live venison butchery, cooking and tasting with former River Cottage head chef Tim Maddams and Craft Skills Scotland.
It’s healthy, sustainable, and delicious! Join us for a community event, as part of the Findhorn Watershed Deer Forum, to learn why we should all be eating more venison and how to cook it well.
The evening will be introduced by deer management expert, Linzi Seivwright, who will discuss the key role that deer management plays within nature restoration and supporting a thriving, local, nature-based economy, and the work we are doing through the establishment of the Findhorn Watershed Deer Forum.
A local butcher from Craft Skills Scotland will then showcase how to prepare different cuts of venison, before chef Tim Maddams takes to the stage with an engaging live cooking demonstration, culminating in delicious tasters for everyone to enjoy.
This event is BYOB, if you’d like to bring along a drink to accompany the evening’s nibbles.

Balfour Beatty is inviting members of the public to learn more about their plans for dualling the A9 between Tomatin and Moy at their Met the Contractor events.
Meet key project staff members, explore an exhibition about the works and learn more about the benefits the project will deliver during construction and beyond.
What to expect…
We are really looking forward to getting started on this exciting project and, in addition to providing you with lots of useful information about what to expect over the next few years from the works, we also want to celebrate the project commencing with the local community.
With that in mind, we have planned a few extra activities for the Tomatin event that will hopefully provide some fun for all the family.
Between 3pm and 7pm, the following activities will be taking place at the Strathdearn Community Hub:
Ecology and bird boxes Meet our ecologists from Ellendale Environmental, learn about what they do, try some of their equipment and build a bird box for your garden.
STEM activities Our digital and technology team will have some of our VR equipment for you to try and will explain how we use this equipment on the project. We will also have PPE to try on and the chance to build your own mini bridges!
Food, fun and face painting! Our friends at the Hub cafe are cooking up a few treats with free soup, cakes and hot and cold drinks and face painting between 3pm and 6pm.
As Transmission Operator for the north of Scotland, we are currently required to provide connections for four proposed new wind farms and wind farm extensions in the Tomatin area, and together these projects are referred to as ‘The Tomatin Cluster’. We are therefore proposing to extend the existing Tomatin Substation to house the transmission infrastructure required to facilitate this renewable generation.

All children U16 must be accompanied by an appropriate parent/guardian.
Please note there will be car parking available within the school car park, top of the school brae (opposite the field), overflow car park down from the shop/cafe and at The Strathdearn.
We are scheduled to host our second round of public consultation events for Lynemore Wind Farm at the end of the month in Strathnairn and Strathdearn. I’ve attached a poster with the event details, and I hope you can share it through some of the community outlets. Leaflets should be delivered to all properties over the next few days, along with adverts in the local press. The Strathdearn event is scheduled for Tuesday 29th at The Strathdearn Hub from 1:30pm to 6:30pm in the main auditorium.
We’ll be presenting more detailed information than at our first events back in March, as our plans have progressed as we approach the planning application submission this winter. The most significant change is the inclusion of 4 additional turbines to the east of the original 10 proposed at scoping and in our previous events, increasing our capacity by more than 30%. We’ll have visualisations of the wind farm from various viewpoints around the site, along with information boards and other key figures. If there’s anything specific you think would be helpful to see, please do let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate.
For those unable to attend the events, the materials will be available on our website, but I’d also be happy to give a brief presentation at the November community council meeting if that would be useful.
