A Highland community has come together for a fun-filled street party in celebration of all things local.
The residents of Strathdearn – an area nestled between Inverness and Aviemore – turned out in style to celebrate their local community on Saturday, May 6.
Held around the Strathdearn Hub in Tomatin, the street party allowed residents to come together en masse for the first time since the pandemic. Complimentary cocktails from Tomatin Distillery and a selection of delicious street food by Frazers Catering, Treats on the Street and Martins Sweets were enjoyed by all, while The Shire took to the stage to belt out a host of sing-along classics.
Maureen McDonald-Cooke, project and development manager at Strathdearn Community Developments (SCD), said: “Strathdearn is a small community of only around 680 people, but we know how to put on a big celebration! It’s been so long since we all got together, and it was amazing to see so many people ready to get into the spirit of things; to sing, dance and catch up.
“SCD would like to extend a huge thank you to our events coordinator Tracy Campbell and all the volunteers that helped pull the street party together. Without everyone pulling together like they did, our community would never have been able to run such a successful event that was enjoyed by all.”
Further musical entertainment on the day was provided by a group of talented volunteers who played a selection of traditional Scottish music. Face painting was provided by Pam Hardwick, with children’s entertainment also coming from Rex’s Reptiles and bouncy castles from KJI’s Inflatables.
The event was organised by SCD, the Strathdearn Hub and a team of passionate volunteers.
Events like this, said Maureen, are crucial for smaller communities where residents may feel overlooked by organisations and events that favour more populated areas.
She continued: “Strathdearn and communities like it have so much to offer. Events like our street party are so important to bring people together, to support one another and have fun together.
“We’re passionate about supporting our community and providing people in Strathdearn with the facilities, events and opportunities they deserve. We’re already thinking about what our next event might be, and are looking forward to seeing everyone again soon.”

MEDIA RELEASE: SAFETY IMPROVEMENT WORKS ANNOUNCED FOR
A9 SOUTH OF FINDHORN BRIDGE
- Works start Monday 15 May 2023 for three weeks.
- Lane 2 closure and 50mph speed limit.
BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s trunk road operating company, will start £40k worth of road safety improvements on the A9 dual carriageway south of Findhorn Bridge on 15 May.
The works will continue for three weeks, taking place on Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm each week. No works are planned on Saturdays or Sundays. Weather dependant, the project will be completed by 7pm on Friday 9 June.
The scheme will install a new section of wire rope safety fence, along with associated kerbs and road markings, to close a redundant crossover gap in the central reserve.
For the duration of the works, Lane 2 will be permanently closed in both directions and a 50mph speed limit will be in place, for the safety of roadworkers and road users.
BEAR Scotland has contacted all relevant stakeholders to inform them of the project and share information about the traffic management arrangements that will be in place.
Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “Trunk road safety is paramount at BEAR Scotland and this investment from Transport Scotland will improve safety for all road users at this location on the A9.
“The traffic management required to undertake these works is essential to keep everyone safe, so we encourage all road users to follow any signs or temporary arrangements, especially speed limits, that are put in place.
“Our teams will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and as safely as possible. We would like to thank road users in advance for their patience during this project and encourage them to plan ahead by checking Traffic Scotland for up to date journey information and leave some extra time to reach their destination.”

‘Due to their only being 2 bookings for the HIIT class and no bookings for the Yoga class, Highlife are unable to provide an instructor this evening as it is not viable.
Please be aware tonight’s class is cancelled due to lack of demand.
If we want the 2 classes to continue on a Wednesday evening, please ensure you book in so we can benefit from a no travel service, it would be a shame to lose the classes at The Strathdearn.’

Please see the attached information. The Worrying about Money app was launched on the 8th February 2023. The app aim is to provide financial support to people who may be struggling with money worries.
The attached document has QR codes to enable you to download the app.
There are also app cards available to order through HIRS http://healthyhighlanders.co.uk/HPAC
Anyone can register for an account and have them delivered to their nearest NHS site.
A promotional poster which will also be available to order through HIRS (Health Improvement Resource Service) so hopefully that will help to spread the word. Please feel free to share this amongst your networks.

Important Info:
Since the event is going to be outside (weather dependant), our car park is going to be closed, if you are taking a car we have the overflow car park at the bottom of the shop brae.
We have limited chairs/straw bales for seating, please feel free to take along your own chair.
All children under the age of 16 must attend with an adult.

Date of next meeting: Tuesday 13th of June 2023
SCD had a life-size replica made of the Invereen Stone, our very own Pictish Stone. The original is now on display at the National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh.
SCD are still looking for a suitable home for our replica, and to celebrate the laying of it, wherever that may be. If you have any ideas that would incorporate the local school children with all generations having the opportunity to feed into the project, please get in touch.
