Betty was born at Clune where her father was the gamekeeper. Her mother died when she was very young and she and her brother and sister were looked after by a housekeeper.

She trained as a nurse before her marriage and has a store of stories, describing in detail  life at home, school, the farming activities, the war years and her life at Glenmazaran where her husband became head keeper.

She gives a picture of a self-contained community in which everyone knew everyone else, along with many amusing anecdotes, from the time she was “strapped” at school to when the Big Snow came in 1978 and her husband and brother went out to help stranded motorists and did not return for 3 days!
