Donald was born at Nethy Bridge and when he was very small his father was called up to serve in WW2 and was taken prisoner in Singapore and spent years in a Japanese labour camp. He wrote of his experiences in graphic detail. When his father returned he built a house in Tomatin where Donald was brought up.

Donald spent time in the RAF in Northern Ireland then on returning home he worked as a land investigator for the roads department. His grandfather was the Bard to the Mackintosh of Moy and Donald has written many a piece especially verses of contemporary comment!
